NEW CLASS: Create a Calligraphy Cake Topper with Cut Machines

Sometimes in life, we’re able to combine our greatest passions. These opportunities are rare, but when they do happen, it’s magic. And magic is exactly what happened when I was able to combine two of my deepest and most sincere loves – calligraphy and cake – into my newest online class: Create a Calligraphy Cake Topper!

Look, I love calligraphy on paper. But sometimes, I want to do something a little different. Sometimes I want to take my calligraphy off the page and into the third dimension. And that’s where SVG cut machines like the Cricut and Silhouette come in. With these machines and a little Illustrator know-how we can turn sketches like this…

How do we do that, you may ask? It’s all about turning our calligraphy into a scalable vector graphic, or SVG file. SVG designs are built using a series of anchor points and paths instead of pixels. This allows the graphic to scale as large or as small as we would like without any effect on resolution. That’s why you can see the Coca-Cola logo super teeny on a can and huge on a billboard and there’s no difference in quality.

But the anchor points and paths do other cool things, too – like talk to cut machines. The machines -- whether they be at-home machines like the Cricut or Silhouette, or large laser-cutting machines – can cut material by following along with those anchor points and paths. The result is incredibly precise, and allows you to use your calligraphy in a whole new way.

And the best part? While that may sound wildly complicated, it really isn’t. In fact, not only do you NOT need to have a degree in graphic design to figure this stuff out, all you really need is some experience in calligraphy and access to Adobe Illustrator and a cut machine. Pretty cool, huh?

In my newest class, I am going to demystify this process for you, and show you in my signature step-by-step style how to go from sketch to custom cake topper in less time than you may think.
